3Ĭalhoun’s experiments with rats and mice proved extremely influential. In the words of one of Calhoun’s collaborators, rodent “utopia” had descended into “hell”. Even when reintroduced to normal rodent communities, these “socially autistic” animals remained isolated until death. At the experiments’ end, the only animals still alive had survived at an immense psychological cost: asexual and utterly withdrawn, they clustered in a vacant huddled mass. Their numbers fell into terminal decline and the population tailed off to extinction. Calhoun called this vortex “a behavioural sink”. Males became hypersexual, pansexual and, an increasing proportion, homosexual. Violence quickly spiralled out of control. 2 But in the sealed enclosure, flight was impossible. Following the work of the physiologist, Hans Selye, it seemed that the adrenal system offered the standard binary solution: fight or flight. Unwanted social contact occurred with increasing frequency, leading to increased stress and aggression. The one thing they were lacking was space, a fact that became increasingly problematic as what he liked to describe as his “rat city” and “rodent utopia” teemed with animals. 1 He had placed several rats in a laboratory in a converted barn where – protected from disease and predation and supplied with food, water and bedding – they bred rapidly. In a 1962 edition of Scientific American, the ecologist John B Calhoun presented the results of a macabre series of experiments conducted at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). Neil, his roommate and unofficial leader of the group. There is a group of friends the story is focused on. Keating, and high five to that my brother, calls that bullshit. And Keating even makes them rip out the introduction of their poetry book, because it has a clinical formula for rating a poem. He makes them walk in a circle to see how easily they fall in step with each other, which is symbolic of exactly what the rest of the authority figures in their lives want them to do. He makes them stand on the desk, one at time - why? To see things from a new perspective. Keating, the new English teacher, wants to do the exact opposite. They will follow in their fathers’ disciplined footsteps and be successful lawyers, businessmen, doctors, whatever. So John Keating isn’t like the other teachers at this fancy private school. And still in others, it shows us how just a little confidence, like Miss Keating gave me, can make us forge ahead with our passion. In others, it opens us up to untapped potential. Unfortunately in some situations, like in this movie, it ends up in tragic situations. But when someone hands you a piece of magic like John Keating, played by Robin Williams, does in Dead Poets Society, you don’t want to let it go. We don’t live in Cinderella or Harry Potter land. Let’s face it, it is tough to find magic in this world. A teacher that commands and inspires, kindles that fire in your loins to live, and see life in everything. If you haven’t seen Dead Poets Society, (And if you haven’t, SPOILER ALERT!!!) it is about that kind of teacher. Thanks Miss Keating, wherever you are! (Hopefully hoisting a pint in some fun location in Ireland.) And suddenly I felt confident that I could write. She listened and made me feel I could contribute something of value. She was from Ireland and for the first time told me what wrote was good. The first time I was ever moved or inspired by a teacher was in high school, and at my high school those moments were very few and far between. From second grade, to high school, to college, I’ve irritated, been snapped at by, and been tossed out of of classrooms by teachers. And there was something inside me, on my face, in my eyes, that instinctively brought out complete irritation in teachers, which could be part of why I hated school. Who knew guys who liked poetry could be jocks too? Many users appreciate its security and privacy features, such as encryption, phishing protection, and spam filtering. Overall, Mozilla Thunderbird is a popular email client that provides a range of features and customization options. I've run out of space now, but you get the point. Namely, half the time when you repond, the reply won't be shown automatically inline (for at least several minutes). However, this add-on comes with its own bunch of issues. Luckily, there is an add-on - Conversations - that fixes this. So in order to see your most recent reply, you have to go to your sent folder. By default, Thunderbird doesn't show your replies inline. These glitches mean I constantly have to mark emails as read/unread, but there is no button on the dashboard to do this (there is with Thunderbird Conversations, but it doesn't work half the time), so in between writing emails is usually one or two times of having to right click>mark>unread/read. I then have to right click this email and mark is as unread as the one it selects generally isn't the one I intend to respond to. When I click from one inbox to another, some of the time a random email will be selected and marked as read. Other times, when I'm responding to an email, the email will suddenly disappear, but it will be marked as read, so I'll have to search through all of my emails to find the correct one again. For example, emails I click on randomly go back to unread automatically, meaning I have to click on them several times to mark them as read again. There are constant glitches that seriously affect workflow. Thunderbird, from my experience, is incredibly slow and buggy. There are a lot of options to sort emails in different folders and the client is highly customizable. There are a lot of add-ons (although the ones I have - Conversations and Quick Text - do not function smoothly). I will continue to give Thunderbird a chance as I need a client that is compatible with Protonmail Bridge, but I will likely jump ship back to Protonmail in the near future. I would have expected to sacrifice aesthetics for usability, but it turns out with Thunderbird you sacrifice both aesthetics, simplicity AND usability/workflow. Which wouldn't necessarily be a problem if the interface wasn't so messy and cluttered. We all find Thunderbird incredibly clunky and unwieldy. Overall my experience has been pretty awful. Apparently, Microsoft Teams doesn't send properly-formatted messages, so this is most often broken, but you can always work around it through manual data entry. Sometimes it captures an Event from an EMail with an ICS attachment - and sometimes it doesn't. Another issue I have is with the built-in calendar. Luckily, these occur only about every 2 years or so. These "improvements" may be beneficial to most users, but moving things around in the UI can slow you down, and the changes can sometimes break automation scripts that rely on specific sequences of keystrokes. Like with any software solution that you've used for 10+ years, the product does evolve, and they change the UI from time to time. Since it's free to use, this makes it even better! CONS Add in the intuitive user interface, multiple-calendar features, a solid address book function, and you have an Email client that is hard to beat. You can also synchronize your profile to your laptop so that all of your Email can travel with you into the field, even while disconnected. All local messages and attachments are stored in a local profile folder, which can be easily moved to a NAS, allowing you to access the Email profile from any machine on the network. With IMAP support, you can enable access to a shared Email queue, allowing multiple employees to see and respond to the inbound messages - ideal for a customer-facing "Sales" or "Support" queue - and every user can see and search on every reply. With support for POP3 mailboxes, you can pull your data off the Email server and retain/manage it all locally, which is great when you have to travel and may not always have access to the Email server, or for when you want the extra security of getting the data off of the Internet quickly. The Thunderbird Email client provides a fast and easy way to corral multiple Email addresses. I can't imagine trying to use anything else! PROS Thunderbird provides small organizations (like ours) a free Email client that is full-featured, fast, and efficient. This is not something that can be relegated to a Web UI or just any old client interface. Email lies at the heart of our business - customer support and customer contact is critical to our survival. So, color us more than curious.īut before we sign off, we have new numbers from Backblaze that give us a nibble at its Q3 results. based on the closing price of 5.23 for a share of the registrantsMay 27. And when double-digit multiples applied to profit and not revenue. .Hey all, So Im a screen reader user and sadly the Backblaze B2 price. Its IPO is a harkening back to the time when it was somewhat difficult to convince private-market investors to value your company in the nine-figures, let alone 10. Which makes Backblaze nearly unique from our perspective. The examples roll from memory: Robinhood was worth dozens of billions when it went public Coinbase was as well when it direct listed NerdWallet is going to be a public unicorn merely on the strength of the written word and AllBirds? More like AllUnicorn. Indeed, even some of the smaller or less traditional companies that we’ve seen debut in recent quarters have had valuations north of $1 billion. Which is notable given the sheer heft of many tech companies we’ve seen go public lately. Backblaze low stock price, good value: 76/100 Obermatt Research Fact based stock research Backblaze (NasdaqGM:BLZE) US05637B1052 How to read the ranks Backblaze stock research in summary Backblaze shares are less expensive than other comparable stocks. That means that Backblaze is going public as a non-unicorn. Quick extrapolation indicates that at the top end of its price range, Backblaze’s IPO could value the storage firm at $684.3 million. Notably the company’s fully diluted valuation is quite a bit higher, with Renaissance Capital reporting that at $16 per share, Backblaze’s valuation inclusive of shares that have been earned, if not yet exercised via options or similar, to be $644 million. And it has, namely an S-1/A filing indicating that the company expects to price its IPO between $15 and $17 per share.Īt its IPO price range and 28,545,893 shares expected to be outstanding after its IPO, Backblaze is worth $428.2 million to $485.3 million. Since it was smaller in revenue terms than most tech companies going public these days, we deferred on judging its worth until Backblaze itself provided some guidance. But when it came to pricing, we had little idea of how to value the company. With a central core of content to help power customer acquisition and a huge swath of customers, it was an interesting cloud storage play. When Backblaze first filed to go public, TechCrunch found it a compelling company. Neard, a portmanteau of "neck" and "beard" ): similar to the chinstrap, but with the chin and jawline shaven, leaving hair to grow only on the neck. Brett: similar to the chin curtain beard, but does not connect to the sideburns. Also called a Lincoln, Shenandoah, or spade. Chin curtain: similar to the chinstrap beard but covers the entire chin.Chinstrap: a beard with long sideburns that comes forward and ends under the chin.Chinstrap, chin curtain and brett are all variations of a jawline beard with distinctions being chin coverage and sideburn length. Jawline beard: A beard that is grown from the chin along the jawline.Worn by Ambrose Burnside (the namesake of the style), Isaac Asimov and Carlos Menem. Sideburns: hair grown from the temples down the cheeks toward the jawline.Old Dutch: A large, long beard, connected by sideburns, that flares outward in width at the bottom, without a mustache.Garibaldi: wide, full beard with rounded bottom and integrated mustache.Full: downward flowing beard with either a styled or integrated mustache. If only the area above the upper lip is left unshaven, the resulting facial hairstyle is known as a mustache if hair is left only on the chin, the style is a goatee. Styles īeard hair is most commonly removed by shaving or by trimming with the use of a beard trimmer. Excess testosterone evidenced by the beard may indicate mild immunosuppression, which may support spermatogenesis. The presence of a beard makes the male vulnerable in hand-to-hand fights (it provides an easy way to grab and hold the opponent's head), which is costly, so biologists have speculated that there must be other evolutionary benefits that outweigh that drawback. The rate of facial hairiness appears to influence male attractiveness. A beard can be explained as an indicator of a male's overall condition. Some scholars assert that it is not yet established whether the sexual selection leading to beards is rooted in attractiveness (inter-sexual selection) or dominance (intra-sexual selection). Įvolutionary psychology explanations for the existence of beards include signalling sexual maturity and signalling dominance by the increasing perceived size of jaws clean-shaved faces are rated less dominant than bearded. Modern biologists have reaffirmed the role of sexual selection in the evolution of beards, concluding that there is evidence that a majority of women find men with beards more attractive than men without beards. Charles Darwin first suggested a possible evolutionary explanation of beards in his work The Descent of Man, which hypothesized that the process of sexual selection may have led to beards. Evolution ĭifferent types of beards: 1) Incipient 2) Moustache 3) Goatee or Mandarin 4) Spanish-style 5) Long sideburns 6) Sideburns joined by a moustache 7) Style Van Dyke 8) Full beard.īiologists characterize beards as a secondary sexual characteristic because they are unique to one sex, yet do not play a direct role in reproduction. Dihydrotestosterone is produced from testosterone, the levels of which vary with season. Dihydrotestosterone also promotes balding. Beard growth is linked to stimulation of hair follicles in the area by dihydrotestosterone, which continues to affect beard growth after puberty. In countries with colder climates, beards help protect the wearer's face from the elements. In cultures where facial hair is uncommon (or currently out of fashion), beards may be associated with poor hygiene or an unconventional demeanor. Other cultures, even while not officially mandating it, view a beard as central to a man's virility, exemplifying such virtues as wisdom, strength, sexual prowess and high social status. Some religions (such as some sects of Islam, and Sikhism) have considered a full beard to be essential and mandate it as part of their observance. Throughout the course of history, societal attitudes toward male beards have varied widely depending on factors such as prevailing cultural-religious traditions and the current era's fashion trends. In humans, usually pubescent or adult males are able to start growing beards, on average at the age of 21. A beard is the hair that grows on the jaw, chin, upper lip, lower lip, cheeks, and neck of humans and some non-human animals.
